Just a couple of points per your recent ping (my apologies for not seeing it earlier):
1) What need do we have of Israeli nuclear weapons? We, long ago, developed the capacity for precision ICBM delivery, and our arsenal could still be deployed to destroy the world several times over. I don't see what Israel's regional power status adds to that.
2) Military bases? We have military bases throughout the entire region. The question we have to ask is whether the marginal benefit of additional installations in Israel is worth the diplomatic costs that necessarily attend this sort of foreign investment. This should, of course, be an on-going consideration. But it is difficult to see how our present situation in the region, in any way, depends on a U.S. military presence in Israeli.
3) Israel, our only real ally in the region? Though you've admitted to having rather one-sided views on this subject, you must concede that the U.S. has succeeded in cultivating several productive partnerships in the region. Amongnst the arab states, Jordan, Egypt, Saudia Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar are a few. But our deepest and most institutionally fixed friendship is with Turkey, a state that has remained a NATO member in good standing since 1952.
